From slobbery kisses to soothing purrs, our pets are so much more than cute companions, they’re absolute champions when it comes to making life brighter.

Research shows that pet owners tend to be healthier, happier, and less stressed than those without furry (or feathered) friends. Pet owners visit the doctor less often, take fewer medications, and report better mental well-being overall. One large Australian study even estimated that pet ownership could save the healthcare system nearly $1 billion each year. That’s a whole lot of good health delivered in wagging tails and soft meows!

But the benefits go beyond just our bodies. Pets also play a huge role in lifting our mood and easing loneliness. They don’t care what kind of day you’ve had, they’re just happy to see you. Nearly all pet owners say their animals are part of the family. And if you've ever cancelled plans to hang out with your dog or cat, you’re not alone.

Dogs are known for helping people stay active and social. From daily walks to dog park meetups, they’re great motivators to get outside and strike up a conversation. Cats, meanwhile, are the low-key masters of comfort and connection. They’re perfect for people who love calm companionship and a warm lap on a rainy day.

And let’s not forget, strong pet–owner bonds don’t just benefit us, they help the wider community, too. In Australia, the majority of cats and dogs entering shelters are classed as strays, often coming from low-income areas. Sadly, many of these animals are never reunited with their families and end up being euthanised. This not only breaks hearts but takes a huge emotional toll on animal care workers and veterinarians. By supporting responsible pet care, improving access to affordable vet services, and helping people keep their pets safely contained, we can reduce these numbers and protect both animals and people.

As Brisbane pet owner Sarah puts it, “No matter what kind of day I’ve had, my dog is always there — tail wagging, eyes shining, ready to make me smile. He’s my best mate and my daily dose of joy.”

So, whether you're tossing a ball at the park or curled up with a purring cat, know this: pets give us so much more than company; they’re good for our hearts, health, and happiness.
