Let’s face it, no one likes talking about wills, it’s all very serious and grown-up. But if you’ve got a furry, fluffy, or feathered friend in your life, it’s worth thinking about what would happen to them if you suddenly weren’t around.

Why It’s Important to Include Pets in Your Will

They’ve sat with you through Netflix marathons, barked at suspicious delivery drivers, and stolen your spot on the couch more times than you can count. So, it only makes sense to make sure they’re covered in your future plans.

For many of us, our pets are family. They provide comfort, companionship, and unconditional love. But unlike human family members, they can’t speak up or fend for themselves if their owner suddenly passes away or becomes too unwell to care for them.

That’s why it’s important to include your pets in your will or broader estate plan. It’s not just for the rich and famous (although some celebrity pets have inherited millions!). It’s a practical step anyone can take to make sure their pets are protected and placed in a loving home.

Choosing a Pet Guardian and Setting Up a Pet Trust

Start by thinking about who you would trust to care for your pet. Have a chat with that person to make sure they’re willing and able to take on the responsibility. You can name them in your will as your pet’s guardian.

You might also consider setting aside a small sum of money for your pet’s ongoing care, think food, vet bills, grooming, and the occasional treat. This can be done through a pet trust or a simple provision in your will. Some animal welfare organisations also offer pet legacy programs, promising to find your pet a new home if no one else can step in.

Estate Planning for Pet Owners: Practical Tips

Even if your will isn’t finalised yet, it’s a good idea to leave written instructions with your family or solicitor about your pet’s needs, what they eat, their favourite toy, and any medical issues. That way, their routine isn’t disrupted more than it has to be.

No one wants to think about a time when they’re not around. At the end of the day, planning for your pet’s future is just another way to show them you care. It gives you peace of mind and makes sure your best mate doesn’t end up in limbo if life takes an unexpected turn.
